Food : Kelabit Style

Food in Miri is somewhat simpler – mostly Chinese style, but recently there have been some influx of Malay, Indian and cafe style cuisine.

But there is one thing that Hubby and myself really enjoy here – that is, local cooking – Kelabit style. These are just simple day to day cooking – meat, fish, and local vegetables. We love it! I do not know how to explain it but it is just simply divine !

Simple yet to-die-for dishes - clockwise from top: 'Mani chai' with egg, smoked/dry cooked fish meat, chicken broth with 'bunga kantan' and braised pork

By The Sea

It actually rained for about 2 hours yesterday morning, and that helped clear up the haze a bit. But by evening, it was back.

However, the sudden showers gave us a brief moment of (almost) fresh clean air and a cool gust of damp breeze. In the early evening, Hubby and I managed to catch about an hour’s stroll by the beach. Tide was out, and there were miles and miles of clean flat sand to skip around on. 🙂

So much sand! Should have brought the two furries for a run!

House Arrest!

The haze is so bad in Miri for the past week or so, and this weekend, it got worse. I am stuck at home longing to be outside with my cup of tea and book but alas it is not possible. Breathing in smokey air first thing in the morning doesn’t sound very attractive at all.

So here I am, confined within the house wondering what to do for the rest of this Sunday. The usual weekly chores are done and I have no spill-over work to be completed. I think perhaps I will go and re-arrange my bookshelf….blehhhhhh….boriing….

Been waiting for this to grow and flower for slightly more than a year. Alas! The much awaited bloom unfolds!

Half Way Into 2009…

My oh my…. where did all the time go? Soon, it will be the holy month of Ramadhan when my Muslim friends will start their fasting, and thereafter Hari Raya celebrations. Before you know it… all those strings of blinky plastic ketupats will be coming down, making way for mistletoes, santa hats and christmas lights…

So what have I achieved so far?

……

……

O-kaaayyy… better get moving then….
